Ah, granola! You’re so very versatile and make my mornings easier. My husband grew up having granola with milk for breakfast and I mainly like it as a topping on yogurt or a bowl of oatmeal. The kids love it too, but I had never actually made it myself at home…until now! Meet my version: chocolate banana granola!
When thinking about a recipe, I knew wanted to combine some flavors we all really love, like chocolate and bananas, but I also wanted to include some extra good for you stuff, like almonds, raw honey, and chia seeds.
The result is a really flavorful batch of crunchy, chocolatey granola that my kids immediately stuck their hands in. The ingredients are few and simple:
- rolled oats
- slivered almonds
- chocolate almond butter
- almond butter
- raw honey
- coconut oil
- chia seeds
- salt
- banana chips
- chocolate chips or sweetened cacao nibs
Making homemade granola turned out to be even easier than I imagined. The first eight ingredients get mixed up in a bowl and then baked (everything except the banana chips and chocolate chips) and that makes for your base recipe. After it comes out of the oven you can really make it your own by mixing in additional ingredients. In this case I chose banana chips and chocolate chips but you could add dried fruits, coconut, etc. Feel free to make it your own!

Granola also smells amazing while it’s baking! One thing I learned is that it can quickly go from smelling awesome to smelling burnt! I recommend checking it every 10 minutes to make sure it’s not getting too done.

- 1/2 cup almonds, slivered
- 1/4 cup chocolate almond butter I get this freshly ground at Whole Foods
- 1/4 cup peanut or almond butter
- 1/3 cup honey I use raw honey
- 2 tbsp chia seeds
- 2 tbsp coconut oil, melted
- pinch sea salt
- 1/2 cup banana chips, roughly chopped
- 2-3 tbsp dark chocolate chips or cacao nibs Cacao nibs make the granola a little less sweet as they are a little bitter
Instructions
- Heat oven to 350 degrees.
- Combine oats, almonds, chocolate almond butter, almond/peanut butter, honey, chia seeds, coconut oil, and sea salt in a large bowl and mix until well combined.
- Spread onto a baking sheet (use parchment paper for easy cleanup) and bake for 20-25 minutes. Take it out every 10 minutes to give it a stir and make sure it's not getting too done. The edges should not get too dark.

Mmm! I love making homemade granola. I like the addition of the banana chips. It would be perfect for. Topping greek yogurt at breakfast. I’ll have to try and make some banana chips from scratch next!
